Expectations
I
expect all skaters to be courteous and respectful to
all club officials, coaches and skaters on the ice.
This includes apologizing politely when you get in the
way of another skater.
Absence:
I expect that skaters will attend all scheduled skating
sessions for which they have registered on time. When
this is not possible I expect to be notified 24 hours
in advance. There will also be times when I am absent
at competitions. I will give advanced notice when possible
via email or my website and supply a substitute coach
as I deem necessary.
Injuries:
If the skater is injured, sick or on any medication,
I need to know this immediately. Also if learning disabilities
are diagnosed this is useful information in order that
I can modify my teaching style to suit the skater.
Warm-Up:
I expect every skater to properly warm-up prior to getting
on the ice. This off-ice preparation should take approximately
15-20 minutes. The warm-up may include myofacial release,
skipping, plyometric jumping, walk thrus of jumps, core
exercises, dynamic stretching, balance and agility drills,
ladder work and/or use of the spinner. The purpose of
this is to avoid injury and maximize the value of the
on ice training sessions.
Cool-Down: Following each on-ice session skaters are
expected to cool-down properly. This process should
take approximately 15-20 minutes. The cool-down may
include walking or a light jog, myofacial release and
deep stretching.
Skating
Attire: I encourage skaters to wear formal
skating attire (dress or skirt) regularly during practice
sessions. Clean, form-fitting sweaters and pants are
also acceptable (no short shorts or hoodies please!).
To attain success skaters must practice the way they
wish to perform. Dressing appropriately is a contributing
factor to success!
Skate
Sharpening: This should occur every 25 to 40
hours depending on ice conditions, care of skates, the
type of blade and the level of your skater. At this
time the blades should be checked to ensure that all
screws are in place. Skates should not be stored in
the skating bag at home as they cannot dry out properly.
Sharpening should be scheduled at least 14 days before
a competition or test and, only an approved figure skate
sharpener should be used.
Music
Selection: I encourage skaters to constantly
listen to instrumental music they would enjoy performing
to on the ice. I am open to suggestions throughout the
season and I truly believe that skaters have more success
if they select music that inspires them.
Costumes:
I expect to be consulted on costume design prior to
purchasing. It is important for the skater to wear the
finished costume a few times prior to a test or competition.
Therefore, please ensure that the costume is completed
at least 2 weeks prior to the event. A matching jacket
or form-fitting sweater, tights and clean gloves are
also necessary.
